Fly Fishing
Fly fishing is an angling technique that uses a light rod, a lightweight artificial fly as a lure, and a heavier line to send the lure to it’s target.
Fly fishing casting techniques are very different from other forms of fishing. Fly fishers cast the line, rather than the lure. As the lure is light, it can only follow the unfurling of a properly-cast fly line.
Those who fly fish compare the physics of fly casting to an art form.
CYO’s Unique Fly Fishing Program
CYO teaches the beginner fly fishing lessons to teens and adults. In Fort Collins, we teach the basics fly fishing right on our own ponds.
At CYO, you will learn overhead and roll & pluck casting. There are many casting styles and techniques in fly fishing, which is probably why someone came up with the term ‘lifelong learning’ as it definitely applies to fly fishing.
CYO’s 3-week fly fishing curriculum:
Week one will cover safety aspects and the 3 major skills necessary to be proficient: rod assembly and knot tying (Clinch knot and surgeons knot), casting (overhead, roll and pluck casting) and retrieval and pond ecology.
Week 2 will involve a safety and skills review. Participants spend time practicing their newly learned skills on the water.
Week 3 will conclude the class with a friendly fishing competition and further instruction on skills (as needed). This class is meant to be fun and to encompass all 4 aspects of PACD: Share your experiences, Be Grateful, Stay Positive and Be Present.
