Camp and Hike Survival
Do you have the tools for survival in the wilderness? It takes preparation, emergency survival gear, navigation skills and strong physical and mental fortitude to improvise, adapt and overcome crisis situations in the outdoors. Learning camp survival is learning how to be prepared for anything!
We often call this orienteering. Orienteering is when you use a map and compass to navigate from point to point. With today’s reliance on cell phones, orienteering is becoming a lost art. In the wilderness, when you don’t have cell service or can’t charge your device, orienteering is a skill you need to survive.
CYO’s Camp/Hike Survival Class
In this class, CYO instructors will introduce you to orienteering using a map, compass and GPS devices. You will learn basic first aid. You’ll find out about the best tools for starting a fire – and what else you can use in a pinch. Plus, we will talk about the emergency survival gear you’ll want to keep in your pack.
With a compass, a map, fire starter, paracord, basic first aid skills and the knowledge gained in our orienteering and camp survival course, you’ll be prepared for anything. It will give you confidence to navigate your way through the wilderness – a confidence you can rely on in many different situations.
CYO’s 3-week camp/hike survival curriculum:
Week one will cover basic survival skills and first aid, what to bring, how to pack your pack, and how to build a fire.
Week 2 will cover orienteering skills, how to use a GPS unit, and a breakdown of the importance of food and water in a survival situation.
Week 3 will conclude with a demonstration of what was learned over the past 2 weeks in a friendly competition. The competition will be fun and encompass all 4 aspects of PACD: Share your experiences, Be Grateful, Stay Positive and Be Present.
