Archery

There’s evidence humans have been using arrows for the last 70,000 years. The bow showed up in Europe about 17,000 years ago. No surprise, it was used for hunting and combat.

After the invention of firearms in the 1800’s, the bow and arrow became less used in warfare, and more used in sport.

CYO’s Archery Program

At Colorado Youth Outdoors, we’ve been teaching archery lessons for teens and adults since 2001.

Shooting a bow and arrow is easy to learn, but difficult to master. It has been called a mental sport – it takes all of your focus. You must cultivate discipline, concentration, and patience.

The key to archery: start with proper form, and repeat!

Repetition is key to the mastery of archery — practice makes perfect — and CYO’s half-mile archery range in Fort Collins is a great place to do that. In Colorado Springs, we use the indoor archery range at Colorado Parks & Wildlife.

CORE class is your time to ensure proper form – parallel feet, proper grip, a consistent anchor point. Our instructors are there to watch and help you make adjustments as needed.

CYO’s 3-week archery curriculum for teens and adults:

Week one will cover safety aspects: range protocols, how to hold & handle the bow, how to hold & handle an arrow. You’ll also learn bow components, eye dominance and the 11 steps to archery success. You will be shooting a bow & arrow by the end of class.

Week 2 will involve a safety review and practical exercise to improve shooting form. Individual instruction as needed.

Week 3 is a competition-style shoot with prizes. This class is meant to be a friendly competition and to encompass all 4 aspects of PACD; Try all activities, celebrate success, respond to feedback, and do your best.
