In 2001, CYO was founded with the help of our ‘CORE four’: Terry Heckman, Chuck Freitag, Tim Johnston, & Don Cumpsten.
When it comes to planning the Maverick — CYO’s largest fundraiser, a clay shoot tournament at Sylvan Dale Ranch on the first weekend of May — the volunteer Maverick committee STILL includes of a whole pile of Heckmans, Freitags & Cumpstens! Not only that, but the vast majority of the committee has been there for over 10 years.
Let’s hear from Traver Heckman (son of Terry) and Debbie Freitag (wife of Chuck) on why they’re still involved.
What did you do for the very first Maverick?
Traver: Technically, wasn’t involved until the 2nd Maverick, which wasn’t called the Maverick just yet. I was a Freshman at Mountain View High School that year. I was the guy pushing the button at a station – the puller. I also helped out at the lunch station.
Debbie: I did whatever was needed. Marion Hewson and Carol Mosier had a decorating committee that I helped with, and we all helped with registration.
How are you volunteering in 2023?
Traver: I attend all the committee meetings, will be helping set up and tear down the course. During the event, I’ll help load clays and will be the tent champion – making sure all the generators run & the electrical works.
Debbie: I handle registration, plus I’m backup help for whatever happens in the tent. I love registration because we get to set the tone for the day. A positive attitude is important – it gets everyone excited!
Why have you stayed involved for the last 21 years?
Traver: I still enjoy it. I get to be involved with an awesome community of people. These days, my wife and kids (6 & 4) come out, my sister and nephew will be there, and my dad won’t miss it.
Debbie: This is a great group of volunteers that I enjoy seeing every year. It’s something I look forward to. Plus, I believe in the CYO mission. It feels good to help out.
Favorite Maverick memory?
Traver: Every year, it’s the morning breakfast. The committee gets together for a giant family breakfast, and we’re all there for a common goal. I really enjoy that part.
Debbie: Seeing everyone’s smiling, excited faces. There’s some funny memories – but you can’t print them!
